Kindergarten Spanish

  • Method:Natural Acquisition

    In Kindergarten, students engage in songs, games, and activities that feature musical elements, drama, predictability, and repetition. Learning in context, automatic linguistic recall, and vocal experimentation based on rhythm and melody memory are all primary attributes of a first language learning experience.  In a natural acquisition scenario, students do not fully realize they are “learning”.  Rather, they gradually increase their comprehension and expression.  Kindergarten students participate in three class sessions per week.  

    NOTE:  At times, students understand general meanings but do not actually know the exact translations of words they are speaking.  This deliberate ambiguity can aid in pronunciation development.  Early awareness of cognates (such as problem and problema, activity and actividad…) can actually inhibit correct pronunciation.  

  • Homework:

    In Kindergarten, homework assignments will generally be completed with an adult or older sibling when appropriate.  Instructions will be clearly provided on Beehively.

  • Assessment:
    • When the students acclimate to the Spanish learning environment, they will regularly engage in oral quizzes.  The student tasks on the quizzes are age and grade appropriate, approved by the Kindergarten teachers.  Parents will be notified when quiz videos  will be available to view on the Beehively.  
    • Student will complete self-assessment rubrics.
    • The Spanish Teacher will complete project rubrics.  Assessment documents and Spanish work will be distributed by the Kindergarten classroom teacher.  
    • Kindergarten student will get credit for homework participation.
  • Spanish Class Activity Examples:
    • Finger-play songs, poems, and stories
    • Active games (Arriba- Abajo, Busca-busca, pato-pato-ganso)
    • Copy and repeat
    • Dances
    • Chants and songs
    • Puppet shows and puppet play

    You will receive an email with this link when Kindergarten Spanish lists new content.  In addition to language curriculum, students will integrate language, geography, religion, and cultural studies as they explore a variety of Latino celebrations.
